The underlying neurobiological mechanisms mediating regional and global brain changes in neurodegenerative diseases, as well as normal aging, are poorly understood. I work with a non-human primate animal model (Macaca mulatta) to examine how immunological, cerebrovascular, and affective factors contribute to neural atrophy in old age using MRI. Long-term calorie restriction is used as an intervention to mitigate the impact of these physiological and behavioral indices.
